SMI supports host community's bid to develop local bamboo industry
Tampakan, South Cotabato – Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) has turned over to the municipal government of Columbio, Sultan Kudarat a brand-new Bamboo Drilling Machine to be utilized for a more efficient and faster way to dig pits and stack the dug-out soil in order to plant bamboo.
Municipal Mayor Tondatu Mangudadatu with Vice Mayor Bai Mamalinta and members of the municipal council received the machine worth PhP 220,000 from SMI on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at the Municipal Hall Compound.
SMI will also sponsor a 3-day orientation to be conducted by the Municipal Environment & Natural Resources to teach LGU personnel on how to use and maintain the machine and how to plant, grow and care for bamboo.
"We thank SMI for continuing to help us not only in our environmental protection campaigns but also in helping us sustain our livelihood and revenue generation projects," Mayor Mangudadatu said.
SMI is the holder of a Financial or Technical Assistance Agreement with the Philippine Government to explore, develop and operate the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project, one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in the world.
Through SMI's 2023 Social Development and Management Program (SDMP), the mining firm continues to fulfil its commitment to the host municipalities of the Tampakan Project and the National Government to develop the project responsibly, push for environmental enhancement and conservation, and promote the economic viability of the bamboo industry in the region.
SMI has long been carrying out multi-sectoral partnerships with its host and neighboring communities in various environmental protection activities.
Since 2006, the Company itself has already planted, distributed, and donated more than 1.3 million endemic, indigenous and fruit bearing trees under its own reforestation programs. (30)
