Significant socio-economic contribution from SMI highlights Columbio 62nd Founding Anniversary
Tampakan, South Cotabato - Through its steadfast commitment to fostering economic growth and progress among its host municipalities, Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) has earned the gratitude of the people of the municipality of Columbio, Sultan Kudarat.
During its 62nd Foundation Anniversary on Thursday, August 3, 2023, Municipal Mayor Tondatu Mangudadatu highlighted the significant role of the mining company in transforming his town into a thriving community.
With its various social development projects, SMI has not only created employment opportunities but has also enhanced the local infrastructure, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions of Columbio.
SMI is the holder of a Financial or Technical Assistance Agreement with the Philippine Government to explore, develop and operate the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project, one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in the world. Columbio is one of the host municipalities of SMI's Tampakan Project.
Annually, SMI downloads a total of PhP4.6 million to the municipal government to be utilized for various socio-economic programs, projects and activities that would uplift the lives of the community.
"Kapos din po ang budget ng munisipyo, kaya malaking tulong po para sa amin ang Sagittarius Mines, Inc.," says Mayor Mangudadatu in his speech.
This year's foundation anniversary celebration culminated with the recognition of the 20 SMI-LGU Scholars who successfully graduated this school year and the distribution of birthday cakes to elderly citizens.
"Maraming salamat sa SMI Family, dahil natupad po ang matagal ko ng pangarap mula noong ako'y konsehal kung papaano mabibigyan ng regalo ang mga senior citizens sa kanilang kaarawan, sa kanilang birthday. The mayor exclaimed, “Maraming, maraming salamat po sa inyo!"
With all major approvals both from the national and local government secured, SMI is ready to start its construction this year and produce its first copper concentrate in 2026. (30)
