SMI hosts educational journey of MGB-XII staff and USeP students
Tampakan, South Cotabato - New staff of Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. XII (MGB-XII) and on-the-job students from the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) had a glimpse of how Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) is developing responsibly the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project.
On Wednesday, August 2, 2023, SMI hosted a whole-day information, education, and communications (IEC) activity for four new geologists from the MGB-XII and four geology students from USeP.
SMI is the holder of a Financial or Technical Assistance Agreement with the Philippine Government to explore, develop and operate the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project, one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in the world.
The group visited SMI's Liberty Core Farm at Barangay Liberty in Tampakan, South Cotabato where they were able to gain an appreciation of the mining company's world-class facilities, which included the Core Sampling Storage Warehouses, Plant Nursery, Butterfly Sanctuary, and Mine-Lay Out Scale Model. They also visited SMI's Stream Gauge Facility at Barangay Buto, also in Tampakan.
SMI’s own geologist Victor Jamio pointed out that the world-class Tampakan deposit was extensively studied with more than 700 drillings conducted within the proposed mine area and then comprehensively evaluated by technical experts from the MGB and other government agencies.
MGB-XII Regional Director Efren B. Carido said that the project visit was a great opportunity for the team to observe and apply their technical know-how on the various geological aspects and concerns in an actual mining environment, "which is necessary to their academic learning and future professional endeavors."
Meanwhile, SMI's External Affairs and Communications Manager Mr. Roy Antonio assured that the Company will continue to consider USeP its major academic partner in the development of mining technology and geosciences (DMTG) as a component of the Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) of the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project.
