SMI, NCIP, ICCs/IPs ensure full compliance with Tampakan Project’s FPIC-MOA

Koronadal City, South Cotabato – A significant milestone in the pursuit of sustainable development anchored with respect and the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Indigenous Cultural Communities/Indigenous Peoples (ICCs/IPs) was achieved with the official oathtaking of the 1st Joint Monitoring Team (JMT) of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs/Ips), and Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI).

The oathtaking ceremony was held on July 2, 2025, at the NCIP Regional Office XII in Koronadal City, spearheaded by NCIP Region XII Regional Director, Atty. Adolf Ryan S. Lantion. The momentous event gathered representatives from the ICCs within SMI’s project areas in Tampakan, South Cotabato, Malungon, Sarangani Province, and Columbio in Sultan Kudarat.

The formation of the Joint Monitoring Team is a major step toward ensuring that all provisions under the FPIC-Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) and its host ICCs are fully implemented and monitored. These include vital services such as livelihood assistance, education, health support, and the overall extension of socio-economic benefits to IP communities especially those directly affected by mining operations.

In his message, Director Lantion highlighted that the JMT is a two-way mechanism that requires cooperation, commitment and responsibility to make the aspirations become reality.

Lantion also cited SMI for its strong track record of adherence to its obligations, and the creation of the Joint Monitoring Team (JMT) strengthens that commitment even further.

“This team will be instrumental in making sure our Indigenous People receive what they rightfully deserve and that our engagements with SMI remain anchored in respect, accountability, and mutual development.” Atty. Lantion added.

“We recognize the importance of organized and inclusive monitoring, and this JMT is one way of helping or beloved IPs.” said Atty. Lantion during the ceremony.

This Joint Monitoring Team (JMT) underscores a shared vision to uphold the dignity, culture, and welfare of Indigenous Peoples while fostering responsible and inclusive development in mining-affected communities and stands as a powerful example of how government agencies, private stakeholders, and IP communities can work hand in hand toward sustainable progress and social justice.
