Tampakan, South Cotabato — As part of its strong commitment to responsible mining and ethical operations, Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) continues to uphold and promote respect for human rights across all levels of its organization, including employees, contractors, and security personnel. Central to this commitment is fostering a culture anchored on respect—for traditions and cultural norms, for the rule of law, for individual dignity, and for the diversity of communities it serves.
In partnership with the Commission on Human Rights Region XII (CHR XII), SMI successfully conducted an Orientation on the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights on May 5–6, 2026 at the SMI Mindanao Admin Office in Polomolok, Liberty Core Farm, and SMI Base Camp in Tampakan, South Cotabato.
The orientation forms part of the company’s continuing efforts to strengthen awareness and understanding of human rights-based security practices among all personnel and agency partners, including FEMJEG Security Agency and Bon Secours General Services.
SMI underscores that all personnel are expected to carry out their duties with professionalism, accountability, and full respect for human dignity—ensuring that actions are free from discrimination and aligned with both national laws and internationally recognized human rights standards.
Beyond compliance, SMI recognizes that responsible security practices are deeply rooted in meaningful community engagement.
The company continues to emphasize the importance of genuine consultation, respect for local customs and traditions, and the building of trust-based personal relationships with host communities, including Indigenous Peoples. These efforts reinforce a shared understanding that security must be exercised with sensitivity, cultural awareness, and respect for community dynamics.
The activity was facilitated by CHR Region XII as part of its advocacy to promote responsible security implementation and uphold human rights in communities and operational areas.

Peñaloza discussed the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, highlighting the importance of integrating human rights standards in all aspects of operations, strengthening adherence to the rule of law, and fostering cooperation among communities, the private sector, and security providers.
