SMI boosts disaster preparedness with two automated weather stations in Tampakan

Tampakan, South Cotabato - Aimed to further enhance its disaster preparedness program, Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) has recently installed two (2) Automated Weather Stations (AWS) in its host municipality of Tampakan, in South Cotabato.

SMI said the project is part of its commitment as a responsible mining company to ensure safe, sustainable operations through timely weather data preparedness and efficient mechanism for disaster preparedness mitigation.

The AWS was installed last December 10, 2024 at SMI's Liberty Core Farm in Barangay Liberty and Base Camp in Barangay Tablu. The stations were interlinked with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) of the Department of Science and Technology.

In his part, Mines and Geoscience Bureau-XII Regional Director, Engr. Efren D. Carido lauded SMI for the project and its continued commitment to responsible mining through various programs and initiatives for protecting its host communities and the environment.

"This will be very useful since it will serve as an early warning system for calamities and as part of the disaster preparedness program of the mining companies," Director Carido said.

"The data and information that will be generated shall be shared with concerned national agencies and local government units in relation to Disaster Risk Reduction and Management plans and programs," he added. (30)
