Tampakan, South Cotabato – Demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) joined the 2026 Philippine Arbor Day celebration and the launch of “Luntiang Bukas: Green, Clean, and Climate-Ready Filipino Communities” through a tree-growing activity on June 25, 2026, in support of DENR Memorandum No. 2026-675 and the MGB directive.
Led by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region XII, the initiative brought together SMI employees, contractors, and community partners in a collective effort to strengthen climate resilience and contribute to the rehabilitation of the Altayan River in Barangay Liberty, Tampakan, South Cotabato.
During the activity, SMI planted 120 Malubago (Hibiscus tiliaceus) seedlings, a native and highly resilient tree species known for its ability to stabilize riverbanks, prevent soil erosion, and support riparian ecosystem restoration. The planting site was strategically selected to help strengthen the river’s natural protection against flooding and land degradation while enhancing local biodiversity.
The activity forms part of the nationwide observance of Philippine Arbor Day, which encourages government agencies, private organizations, and communities to contribute to environmental conservation through tree-growing and other greening initiatives.
As a company committed to responsible mineral development, SMI continues to support environmental protection programs that promote ecosystem rehabilitation, watershed conservation, and climate-change adaptation.
By supporting initiatives that restore and protect natural resources, SMI reinforces its commitment to sustainable development and creating lasting environmental benefits for present and future generations. (30)
