Tampakan, South Cotabato – What starts as a simple opportunity can grow into a life-changing journey. For Jenny Rose Sukal Abojado, originally from Sitio Sbangken, Barangay Tablu, and now residing in Poblacion, Tampakan, that journey began as an SMI Educational Assistance beneficiary, and today continues as she proudly serves as an Environmental Technician at Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI).
Jenny was among the many beneficiaries of the company’s Educational Assistance Program, which supported her from high school until college.
“Gikan pa sa high school hangtod college, nahimong scholar ko sa SMI,” she shared.
Coming from a financially challenged background, she described how the program eased their struggles and gave her the chance to complete her education.
“Financially unstable gyud mi sa una. Pag-abot ni SMI, na-lessen ang burden kay naghatag sila og chance sa mga parehas namo, nakadawat mi og monthly allowances hangtod nakahuman mi,” Jenny recalled.
Today, Jenny has come full circle, working within the same company that once supported her studies. As an Environmental Technician, she now contributes to environmental monitoring and responsible practices that help protect natural resources.
“Dako kaayo ang tabang ni SMI, sugod pa sa nag-eskwela pa ko hangtod karon nga nagtrabaho na ko diri,” she said with gratitude.
Her journey reflects not only personal success but also the long-term impact of investing in education and community development. Now a professional, Jenny uses her experience to encourage students currently benefiting from the program to stay focused and committed.
“Sa mga nag-eskwela pa nga gina tabangan ni SMI, padayon mo sa pagtuon ug pagpaningkamot. Magtuon og maayo kay kini ang inyong puhunan para sa future,” she shared.
Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) continues to support education as part of its commitment to empowering host communities and developing local talent. Through its Educational Assistance Program, the company helps students pursue their studies and eventually contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Jenny Rose Sukal Abojado’s story is a powerful reminder that education can change lives. From a young beneficiary with limited means to a dedicated Environmental Technician, her journey shows what becomes possible when opportunity is met with determination.
As SMI continues to invest in education and community empowerment, more stories like her will emerge—stories of growth, gratitude, and a future shaped by hope and hard work. (30)
