SMI takes action to #BeatPlasticPollution on World Environment Day

Some 24 employees joined the early morning activity that collected 12 sacks of plastics/residual wastes and 65 sacks of biodegradable debris.
Since 1974, World Environment Day is the United Nation’s most important event for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. This year’s theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution” which seeks to influence change in the areas of reducing single-use plastics, improving waste management, phasing out microplastics, and promoting research into alternatives.
The month of June is also celebrated as Environment Month in the Philippines by virtue of Proclamation No. 237.
“Guided by our Sustainable Development Policy, SMI aims to preserve the long-term health, function, and viability of the natural environments affected by our operations. This WED cleanup drive in Sarangani Bay is SMI’s way of communicating our commitment to environmental protection and working in solidarity with the government, especially the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and other sectors towards a healthy environment,” explains Sol Mari Tupas, SMI Environment and Safety Superintendent.
A 2015 report on plastic pollution by international group Ocean Conservancy and McKinsey Center for Business and Environment identified the Philippines as the world’s 3rd biggest source of plastic leaking into the ocean.
