This is a regular position, based in Polomolok, South Cotabato, tasked to implement SMI’s tax management processes to ensure the business’ continuing compliance with Philippine taxation requirements.

Key responsibilities:

Sustainable Development Practices – Ensure appropriate corporate governance and commercial controls are complied with to protect SMI’s fiduciary interests. Ensure confidentiality and prudence in all documents.

External Audit – Ensure all tax-related transactions and documents comply with reportorial requirements and timetable.

Tax Management – Manage processes to ensure compliance with all Philippine taxation rules for SMI and its subsidiaries, prevent misstatements in internal and external tax reporting, and eliminate risks of erroneous tax charges and penalties.

  • Work closely with the Contracts Team in reviewing all contracts for tax implications and appropriate tax applications. Assess foreign contracts to determine where tax treaty relief is beneficial and applicable.
  • Lodge the necessary documents for Tax Treaty Relief Application (TTRA) with the International Tax Affairs Divisions (ITAD) in consultation with external advisors and consultants.
  • Review accounts payable vouchers to ensure proper tax applications are made on all business transactions.
  • Timely and correct preparation, filing and disclosures of corporate tax returns ensuring timely and correct balance sheet positions, and reliable tax reporting.

Internal Control Compliance – Updated tax compliance calendar for SMI and its affiliates by week 3 of each month.

  • Manage monthly tax records that are reconcilable and easily traced to supporting documents.
  • Ensure an optimal relationship with external tax experts, external tax advisors and tax authorities.

Contracts Review – Coordinate with contracts team and review contracts prior to AFC sign off to ensure proper tax applications are provided for in the contract terms, and most effective contractual arrangements are in place.

Tax Information Campaign– Ensure awareness on the most recent updates on court decisions and BIR issuances related to tax that could have an impact to the company.

Key requirements:

  • Certified Public Accountant with solid experience in tax management and a range of finance functions preferably from a professional office
  • Minimum of three (3) years of work experience in taxation and contracts review
  • Experience in documentation requirements for tax treaty relief applications for foreign contracts with the International Tax Affairs Division (ITAD) is a plus
  • Computer literate and with knowledge and experience in using integrated accounting packages
  • Knowledge of the requirements of VAT, EWT, FWT, FBT, MCIT, RPT, LBT and other taxation rules
  • Ability to plan own work, set priorities and complete it under pressure
  • Good organizational skills and customer service orientation; highly numerate; commercial acumen
