Fifty-three (53) Science teachers from South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat attended a seminar on responsible minerals development on April 26, 2017 in Koronadal City.
In partnership with the Department of Education Region XII, the event was presented by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region XII and the SOCCSKSARGEN Responsible Miners Association (SRMA) to promote awareness and understanding of responsible minerals development among the science teachers in the two provinces. The seminar also aimed to address misinformation and misconceptions about minerals development.
Geologists and mining engineers from MGB XII gave lectures on geology and mining, myths and facts about geohazards, and the salient features of the 1995 mining law and its differences from laws governing mining activities in the past.
“We had some bad experience about mining in the past, and this is being addressed by the new mining law. The Philippine Mining Act of 1995 and other related rules, regulations, and policies are now in place to help ensure that our negative experience in mining will not happen again. “
“The highest standards of safeguards are now required of mining companies. Many of these standards were not required under the old mining law,” said Engr. Jilvert Mondido, Senior Geologist of MGB XII.
Engr. John Mikel Ansao, mining engineer from MGB XII, emphasized that mine rehabilitation is mandated by the 1995 mining law, and must be planned even before mining operations can start. He said mining companies are required to deposit in a government bank the mine rehabilitation fund; if the company later cannot undertake the rehabilitation of the mine, the government will take charge of the rehabilitation using the deposited fund.
MGB XII also invited mining companies operating in the province, Tribal Mining Corp., and Sagittarius Mines, Inc., to give updates on their respective activities. SMI Corporate Linkages Superintendent Rolando Doria discussed SMI’s activities in the Tampakan Project and emphasized the company’s commitment to the highest standards of sustainable and responsible mining.
The Science teachers encouraged MGB XII and the mining companies to continue to conduct similar activities to promote awareness about responsible mining.
